    When I upgrade to Jaunty.....

On my Intrepid install, I have a separate /home partition. When I do a new install of Jaunty next month, can I use ext4 for my root partition and leave my /home partition as ext3, or do I have to make them both ext4 or leave them both at ext3?

I'm getting better at this, but this one has thrown me completely.

    TIA for your help.

Or, to elaborate, see the posts toward the end of this thread:

I'm going to install the Beta on Friday, on an ext4 partition. And then install an 8G Win XP VM on that, with a large MS Visual FoxPro database. It won't take too much reindexing and file-exporting to see how rugged ext4 is ....

Thanks very much, kubicle and dibl, for the replies. I may ask the same question again after the release, to see if all is still well.

I'm not as gung-ho as I was a couple of years back. I don't enjoy the breaky bit as much as I used to.

Slightly OT but in keeping with the title of this thread.

I note we're at beta time again and it's at this point I usually upgrade, although I must say I'm more hesitant than I used to be for 2 reasons, namely:

The upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 at this stage didn't go too well, resulting in me having to format and reinstall 8.04 and

At this point 8.10 really flies for me on my humble dell 630 laptop and is rock solid too.

OTOH, there appears to be some rather nice new things happening in 9.04.

Looking at the various options I'm thinking my best bet is to download the alternate CD which I can then use as an upgrade source, which I see is actually being promoted by 'buntu as an option. Has anyone tried that as a way of doing it, without a disaster? I suppose it also will serve as a fallback if things go pear-shaped.

I'm not too worried about digging myself out of a minor hole but as I no longer dual-boot (electing to run XP in a VM) an inability to boot following an upgrade would be a problem. Has anyone experienced anything so bad they couldn't recover?

          Thanks for listening
