Alpha 5 to 6 upgrade problems (No desktop after upgrade)

I can login but only get a mouse pointer and black screen after a restart. If I can't get a resolution I may just burn a new CD and install fresh. Anyone have some recommendations? Thanks

Well, several reboots never did anything so I tried stopping and restarting kdm. That finally did it.

I've found that when ever the upgrade includes the kernel, which always requires a reboot, the desktop hangs at a black screen or after the globe of the earth displays.

For me, both occurrences were because the ownership of ~/.ICEauthority was changed from my account name to root, so it became a permission problem.

If the hang happens with the next kernel upgrade then open a Konsole and stop kdm, like you did, use chown to change ownership of .ICEauthority back to you, and then restart kdm.

I also had problems with my xorg configuration and sound. Alpha 5 allowed me to set my screen resolution to 1680x1050 but not Alpha 6. I tried a number of tools and finally just made a hand edit to my xorg.conf file. I couldn't track down the sound issues so I downgraded back to Alpha 5. There was a kernel update with Alpha 6, maybe that caused some of the issues. I'm not too familiar with the sound configuration in Linux so I'm not going to burn a lot of hours debugging. If anyone has clues on the sound problem I may try Alpha 6 again.

My sound problems were restricted to Amarok. If anyone else experiences a problem after an upgrade or install of Alpha 6, I fixed it by making xine the preferred music playback engine in the Multimedia settings.
