    Re: sound

You seem to be having some unusual problems with the audio components of your installation. First the s-video thing and then this. The obvious question: did you do an md5sum check on your Kubuntu ISO before you burned it? Did you do an md5sum check of the LiveCD after you burned it?

What is the make and model of the PC you are using.

Post back the results of those two commands.

You have a good sound chip:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Does the KDE4 startup song play when the desktop appears? (I.e., can you hear sound in other situations besides trying to play a flash video?)

Is there a speak icon in the system tray?

the only things that can play are the boot and shut down tones and the test tone everything else is static and nothing in the tray resembling volume some guy told me that if i downgraded to hardy it might help... i just realized that igot the 32bit download and a lot of those things are 64bit

A 32bit ISO should have no problem running on a 64bit machine. Before I swithed to 64bit Karmic I was running the 32bit Jaunty on my 64bit dual core 2.

Does the KMixer icon appear in the system tray? (It looks like a speaker with green arcs radiating away from it.)

Nomally, when you try to install an application the tool will tell you what went wrong if it couldn't install the app.

For example: if you issue "sudo apt-get install kmixer" you might get a message say "The latest version of Kmixer is already installed", or something like that. Or, "cannot install because of a dependency which cannot be installed" -- a dependency block. etc....

For a good installation you would see the list of repositories go by (in a konsole), then a statement as to what is being added or removed, before the prompt returns. You didn't see any of that?

mmm... at this point I would re-ask a question which you've overlooked, or I didn't see the answer to:
