Screen is shut down when laptop lid is closed

I use Jaunty and KDE 4.3 on a Lenovo 3000 C200, but the same problem was present under KDE 4.2 too. Although I set in PowerDevil to do nothing when I close the laptop lid, it darkens the monitor when I close it. So I can't use an external monitor with my laptop closed. Is there any way to counter this problem?

It sounds like you might want to have a look at your computer's BIOS to see if there are any relevant settings there. At boot-up, it'll probably flash up a message saying something like "Press F2 to edit BIOS settings" (or ESC or some other key). Have a look in there, but be careful not to change anything you're not sure about!

That doesn't help. I didn't find any such setting in the BIOS settings.

I even tried to disable monitor power management, but that didn't help either.

AFAIK it is a good thing that the screen goes blank when you close the lid. The only weird thing is that your external monitor goes blank, too. How do you connect to it? What is your set up, what software is involved? I used to use krandrtray which gives you all the options. Have you played around with that? There is even a power module.

It not only shuts down the screen, but also locks the session. I set it up using the monitor settings under System Settings.

Okay, in that case you have set up your computer so that it does exactly what you say it does. But that is a laptop set-up which is not very useful in this case Bring up the battery widget (I have it on my taskbar), click on it, edit presentation mode to your liking and activate it. Now call up krandr and set up your external monitor.

You should now be able to close the lid and everything should carry on as normal.

Doesn't work, even if I disable the laptop monitor.

As I said, I set in Powerdevil for both Performance and Powersave modes to do nothing when the laptop lid is closed. But it still shuts down the monitor.

I think I found the problem. ACPI wasn't upgraded to KDE 4, and uses it's own powwesaving policy unless gnome-power-manager or kpowersave is running. Now I have the question: what's the name of the PowerDevil daemon? I figured out that it's not powerdevil and neither kpowersave.
