does x-fi sound cards work right out of the box in kubuntu?

I'm thinking about getting an X-fi card but I'd like to know if it works in kubuntu before buying it. (I usually keep kubuntu updated, so I don't want to manually recompile/reinstall any module every time the kernel is updated).

Anyone has any experience with these cards?

    Thanks in advance,
    Toshiro.

Don't know of anyone who has any experience with X-Fi, but there is a linux driver for it.

    The steps are here:

Read the entire thread before you start doing anything. The steps are involved.

This is the most recent info I can find on the Creative Labs site

The 2.6.31 kernel in k/ubuntu-9.10-karmic has native alsa drivers for X-Fi cards, and they work.
This means you don't need to install anything to make the card work, just plug it in.
Karmic is still in alpha-test stage, and some things don't work properly (including pulseaudio), so you wouldn't want to upgrade your system to 9.10 just yet. And as of right now, there does not appear to be any support for the synthesizer functions of the X-Fi chip. But the future looks good.

          Ya, the 2.6.31-2 kernel.

Here is a step-wise listing to get a sound card working.
          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449
There are a couple of errata in the comments section.

"If that doesn't work, try the following:

          sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-source
          sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) module-assistant alsa-source
          sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source
          sudo module-assistant a-i alsa-source
          reboot"

From the bug report on this problem:

#85 Mads Peter Rommedahl wrote on 2009-07-24:

I'm marking it as fixed as it seems the ALSA shipped with karmic alpha3 (and probably alpha2 as well) detects the X-Fi (at last!!!)
It's good to have this fixed - better late than never

If anyone still have trouble just reopen the bug.

If you are just afraid of manually recompile/reinstall, maybe you can use this
Automatically update manually installed NVidia drivers after kernel updates

Thank you very much for all the answers! It's good to know that I can safely buy an X-fi card.

I'm eagerly awaiting for karmic release!
