    nvidia upgrade gone bad

    I just swapped the nvidia mx4000 for a 6200.
Before I did that I switched back to the nv
driver. I then ran 'sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*'.
After the card was replaced all ran fine with
the nv driver. I then installed nvidia-180-kernel-source,
    nvidia-180-modaliases, nvidia-glx-180. I then
ran nvidia-xconfig and rebooted. Everything was
fine until the kdm login screen which was black.
I tried the previous xorg.conf with no luck. I
have now purged everything nvidia- again and am
looking for advice on what to do next. I'm
sure I've overlooked something important. I
also would prefer to use the drivers in the repos.

The only reason I replaced the mx4000 was to get
    desktop effects working better.

    Thanks for any info.

    Re: nvidia upgrade gone bad

I don't have great luck with Kubuntu's "Hardware Drivers" aka jockey-kde, so I install the downloaded nVidia driver. Here is the process -- you can substitute "185.18.36" for the version mentioned in the link:

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...4892#msg164892

BTW, today I'm running 190.18.03 with no problems whatsoever, on the 9.10 alpha version. So maybe you want to give that one a try.

      Re: nvidia upgrade gone bad

Followed your suggestion but no joy. Installation seemed
to work but still black screen. I tried the 190.18.04 driver
and when I get a chance I'll try the 185 driver. I suspect
something in my installation hanging on from the 96 driver
      I was using before.

Any ideas troubleshooting this problem would be appreciated
as I've not had much luck with these type problems.

I can live without desktop effects but would rather not. I
also noticed video from movie trailers is now choppy.

The error in the log is:

(EE) failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

There were no errors during the driver installation.

      Thank again for any help.

Meh -- that says the driver is not installed. No need to download a different version -- 190.18.03 should be fine, and if it won't install, a different version will fare no better.

So, some little twitch in the process is not right.

        Did you:

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`

Note that the little character around "uname -r" is not a single quote mark, it is the character that shares the key with the tilde "~" on a US keyboard.

Did you add "nv" to Disabled_Modules in the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common file?

In your case, at the end of the installation process, you should choose "Y" and let it write a new xorg.conf file.

That's all I can suggest, unless you can report errors encountered during the process.

          Re: nvidia upgrade gone bad

linux-headers and build-essential were already installed and I
added "nv" to "Disabled_Modules" in "/etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common".

I seen no errors during the install and let it write a new xorg.conf.

The driver file nvidia_drv.so is located in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/driver.

I will try enabling the driver again and when it fails I will recheck the the
log file to make sure the error is the same and will reply back if I find
          something different.

          Thanks for the suggestions.

The earlier error message was not there and it appears
to try to run the nvidia driver. The log is as follows:

No idea what these warnings are. The symptoms are the same as using the 180
driver from the repos. Since the video card works with the 'nv' driver I'm guessing
            its not the card.

Any ideas will still be appreciated.

            Thanks again.

I think this is significant -- you need GLX to run any eye candy.

Here's a thought -- just in case the driver isn't getting the job done writing the xorg.conf file, Ctrl-Alt-F1 out of X, shut it down with

              Code:
              sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
run the X configuration utility with glx and compositing options:

              Code:
              sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
              start X:
              Code:
              sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
login and see what you have. If it won't go, post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and we'll see if there's anything obvious to change.

I downloaded the 190.19.04 driver from
the nvidia site downloads. I have since
uninstalled that driver and tried the 173 and
96 drivers with the same result. I had also
used my previous xorg.conf which had the
options you suggested. I will copy the file
just in case something not right.

                  Re: nvidia upgrade gone bad

I finally gave up on getting the nvidia 6200 agp card
to run. I tried all three drivers in the repos and two
different ones from the nvidia site and tried this n that
with the xorg.conf. Problem was aways a black screen
just as the kdm login screen should appear. I reinstalled
the mx4000 card and the 96 drivers and its working as
before. Because the 6200 card worked with the nv
                  driver I doubt its bad.

If anyone who is running a nvidia 6200 apg card has
ideas or can report what driver they are using the card
is going to be returned. The mx4000 does not handle
the desktop effects as well as I would like and thought
                  the 6200 would work better.

Thanks goes to dibl for sharing his knowledge.

                    Sorry it wasn't more useful.

Your xorg.conf file looks fine. Any of the new drivers (185 or 190) should work with a 6200. The agp interface is kinda outdated, but it should still work. So, I dunno ... maybe there's some issue with the design of that particular model of card or something.
