need support for two pieces of hardware to switch from XP

    Hi All,

I finally found a customer that I can actually switch from M$ to Linux. He is afraid of having his financial matters hacked, so I told him to get the best protection, he has to switch to Linux (Kubuntu). And, for once, the software he uses is compatible: Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, Picasa! (No Quick Books, Acrobat Professional, Autocad, Pro Fx Tax, yada, yada ...)

So I fired up the install CD in Live CD mode. The only thing the Live CD did not catch was

    1) Modem: Conexant D850 PCI V.92
    2) Sound: 82801G (ICH7)

Does any one know if the full installation of 9.04 will support these two?

    Many thanks,
    -T

    Wow!

That's almost a 10 year old modem. Try this website: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/

      Thank you!

Would the D850 be the DGC chipset?

Also, old is good. It mean the device is more than likely to be supported. Is there a way to see if it is supported in 9.04?

There MAY be a 9.04 Jaunty driver, depending on the kind of Conexant modem you have. (D850 doesn't tell you what you need to know). The FREE version is limited to 14.4kb/s. If you want 56kb or higher (v.92) you have to buy the $20 license.

I am not sure that "sudo lspci" will show you what you need to know so, first, Identify the modem: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/modemident.php

Then you will know if it is an HCF, HSF or DGC version

Once you identify the modem you can first download and install:
        http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/

Then chose the proper modem driver. Note that these are dependent on the exact version of the kernel. If you do a kernel update it would probably break the driver. So, using Synaptic, you can pin the kernel and kernel header to the appropriate version for the driver.
        HCF: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hcf/...-installer.php
        HSF: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/...-installer.php
        DGC: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/dgc/install.php
        RIPTIDE: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/install.php

          Wow! Thank you.

The customer's machine is a Dell OptiPlex 330. And, since I have his service tag, I looked up what is supposedly his modem from the original configuration page. It is a "JF495, Modem, V.92, Data Fax, Internal SON2" which does not good.

And, I just chatted with Dell tech support. They "think" it is an HFC and a "Windows" modem.

Guess I will just have to try it and see. I am going to be doing this on a separate hard drive any way, So the customer can go back to XP while I hunt down anything extra he needs.

You can always boot the Kubuntu Live CD and do experiments configuring networking, with no risk to the Windows installation. No need to install if there's some fatal incompatibility that you discover with the Live CD.

That is what I did. Could not find anything about configuring a modem. But, then again, I never looked in Networking. Do you configure modems in networking? Is there a GUI for configuring modems?

Re: need support for two pieces of hardware to switch from XP

Sorry, I have exactly zero experience setting up a modem in Linux. I would assume that the package that dials the connection number is where the configuration of the modem (the commanding of it) is done. Then, once you have the connection, you will use the network configuration utilities to run ethernet on that port, get an IP address, etc. etc. Found this -- you might want to do a little research in Ubuntu Forums:
