Getting at the ourth gig of Ram

I have a gig of ram being ignored as it sits above 4G.

Is there a kernel variant or option to go beyond 32 bit addressing (it seems to me that there used to be one). Or do I need to go to the amd64 release. Err, that would be the right release or a dual core centrino, wouldn't it?

    thanks

IIRC, accessing RAM above 3GB requires that you use the server kernel.

      Ahah.

I put in the server kernel, and now I have all my memory.

And I still have the phantom cycle-sucker

I supposed that what I should *really* do is configure and compile the kernel myself . . .

      thanks

Re: Getting at the ourth gig of Ram

I searched in vain trying to learn whether that CPU has a 64-bit architecture, or not:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino

        http://www.intel.com/products/centri...core+body_cduo

I noticed that when I went to Intel CPUs on their web site, and then "mobile processors", they highlight the 64-bit capability for those that have it. For the Centrino, reference to "64-bit" is conspicuously absent. I'm going to stick my neck out and say it's 32-bit.

Meaning, what Snowhog said is about it for your pre-compiled kernel choices. There is, as I recall, a way to set up an extension in a custom-compiled 32-bit kernel to enable it to find memory beyond the normal 3.x GB limit, but that's beyond anything I've ever attempted.

I'm remembering something about that option being there, but at the time I laughed at the though of paying for that much memory.

Then again, having the 1G to 1.5G of ROM that leads to the funny placement of the ram is also beyond my comprehension . . .
