Saitek Eclipse keyboard + Kubuntu - audio buttons

I can now control volume with the Up and Down volume buttons on my Saitek Eclipse keyboard. I merely had to map them to the "Master" channel of my sound card (a SoundBlaster Audigy ZS2). They did nothing as long as they were mapped to the plain old "Decrease Volume" and "Increase Volume" functions under the Kmix section of Global Keyboard Shortcuts, which don't appear to have anything to do with either the motherboard's built-in sound (Intel HDA chipset) or the Audigy.

However, I can't get the mute button to work. I tried mapping it to the "Toggle Mute - Master [Audigy ZS2]" function, but it doesn't do anything. Nor does it do anything when assigned anywhere else.

How can I map a mouse button to create a keypress? I have one of the side buttons on my Logitech MX310 mapped to "Esc" under Win XP, and it's a big help. While I was able to edit xorg.conf to get the side and middle buttons working, I can't see how you would make one of the side buttons do a keypress.
