    help please ATI Radeon

Hello kubuntu people, i may have done something stupid and don't know how to correct it, fist i installed catalyst from synaptic, restarted my computer and used:

    Code:
    sudo aticonfig --initial -f
everyting worked perfectly even 3D, but when i was watching videos the screen was like not well synchronized, so i tried to install the driver form the amd page, when i did, desktop wouldn't start, so i uninstalled it and the original driver worked ok but no 3D, so i entered K>System>drivers and clicked on video driver, restarted, and now desktop wont start again, and i don't know how to uninstall that driver, last time i uninstalled the ati driver, i used:

    Code:
    sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh
so please help, i want my kubuntu back
I may not agree on what you are saying, but i would give my life to defend the right you have to say it...

    Re: help please ATI Radeon

You said the desktop won't start, so it seems that your system is working, minus KDM.

Go to /etc/X11 and check your xorg.conf file, you should probably see a couple of older ones like xorg.conf.2009mmddhhmmss. If you have only made one change since the system was working, probably the newest one is the one you want. Change it to xorg.conf and reboot. If you have several files, delete the ones which don't work and give the others more meaningful names.

When your system starts with the 'old' xorg.conf, it should work, then you can use Kmenu > system > drivers to uninstall the proprietary driver. If you an older version, pre Jaunty, try
    Code:
     sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg
and leave all of the default settings, but change the frame buffer device to not default. It gets rid of the synch. problem.

    Edit: corrected code line

      Re: help please ATI Radeon

While I was installing my Jaunty again yesterday, I found two disclaimers (in Dutch) saying not to install ATI's own drivers because at the moment they are not so good (for 9.04). Better is to keep using standard open-source drivers for your ATI card. Negatif aspect of this, is that your card will not be functioning at full.
