    Recommended hardware

Yes, I know. I should be able to find this somewhere on the web but all posts I find are outdated.

I am about to buy myself a new computer and I need to know if there are graphiccards and mobos to prefer before others.
i will gladly accept all opinions and links.

      Re: Recommended hardware

Here's a good thread to review:

      http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=361236

Asus P5 family of mobos seem to work well, along with my Intel mobos.

Graphics -- I just stay with nVidia and skip the grief.

Brand new? You can get decent hardware used but if you must buy new, then are you going with an AMD or Intel machine?

I think the main concerns regarding hardware in Linux are these:
          Ethernet controller/hardware (aka NIC card)
          Video (card)
          sound card
          printers

If you use extra hardware, then you might want to know about which 'X' to buy and these include:
          webcams
          mp3 players
          printer/scanner/copier etc.

For a video card, get Nvidia. ATI doesn't have the best support in Linux although it will be insisted otherwise. Whatever support there is, there are still problems that you run into when trying typical video work.

Sound card - check the ALSA page / wiki for supported sound cards and the included chipsets.

printer - very difficult (IMHO) to shop for. I find the site, 'Open Printing' to be a good source or at least, a good starting point.

          http://www.linuxfoundation.org/colla...s/openprinting

I will just speculate here, but I think laser printers are easier to shop for than inkjets or the multi-function types. I could be wrong but it seems there aren't very many 'Linux-friendly' inkjet and/or multi-function printers. The scanning functions hardly ever work according to my searches. It's probably better to buy an older scanner if you need it in Linux. I might buy a Canon IP2600 inkjet some time. I read they are quite usable in Linux.

Ethernet hardware - Realtek usually is very good. Not too many problems. Marvell is hit or miss. You might veer on the safe side and stick with Realtek. Atheros is said to be good for wireless cards but their recent hardware in a lot of Asus motherboards wasn't immediately workable in most distros. Perhaps, recent kernel distros are good for that hardware but I am not sure. Just be wary.

So, I would recommend Gigabyte motherboards so you can choose either AMD or Intel Gigabyte boards and very likely have everything work out of the box. I own a Gigabyte P35 mobo and had no problems installing several distros. I also use an Audigy 2ZS sound card with no hardware-related problems. The onboard Ethernet card is Realtek.
