    Well, I can't mark this thread as solved, but unless someone has a new idea, I plan to just live with it until next year. Maybe a kernel update will fix it.

        One idea would be to try some of the typical bootup fixes like disabling acpi, etc. The leaner the bootup the better if the hardware seems to be going belly up soon. I would probably invest on an external HD and have a full external backup once a week, these days you can get 1Tb for about $100 USD.

        I agree, particularly if you like AMD (I love it's performance/price ratio), it's good to wait for USB3 and AM3 to be popular so you can use DDR3 at reasonable prices, I think one year seems about right.

          Yes, I've tried it with the different boot options, not to mention playing with every setting in the bios.
