Newbie - looking for hardware browser gui? or equivalent? + misc questions

guys, i have a compaq cq40 , running JJ ( earlier i was on mandriva 2009)

A. i was wondering whether kubuntu has some kind of hardware browser gui or a good command line (ncurses based/)equivalent. in mandriva, the hware browser is available under MCC. my touchpad isnt working and i would like to troubleshoot that. but since i intend to learn more abt kubuntu i would like to know if there is such a hardware browser available?

B. in konqueror ( mandriva box ) we can type sysinfo:/ and get useful hware info. How do we activate this in kubuntu jj?

C. I am using wicd now for NIC management. is there another software there that can handle profiles ,even for wireless cards? or a commandline (ncurses) equivalent to manage network cards. i am thinking of firewall boxes (running iptables / shorewall ) with multiple NICs.

I used to use Mandrake, too. I think a tool like this is missing here. There was something like this in KDE 3 Vanilla.

Anyway, on the command line maybe lshw is the most useful thing. For a GUI, there will be some pieces of info in different modules in System Settings, such as Multimedia. Also, there may be some more info in Hardware Drivers (where you can also enable any needed -and dreaded- binary only drivers).

i use a program called sysinfo.(installed from the repos) to look at my hardware although its not that in depth.
the best thing for you to do (that will result in the most info about your hardware) it to open konsole and run

sudo lshw

i know its not quite what your were looking for but from what i have seen its much better then using a gui based program .

As the "lmilano" and the "sithlord48" wrote the "lshw - list hardware" is a good tool.

There are also "hwinfo - probe for hardware" and the KDE Info Center (K > Applications > System > Info Center).

Package: kinfocenter - system information viewer for KDE 4

KInfoCenter provides you with a graphical overview of various aspects of your
system, such as memory usage, storage capacity, and attached devices.

This package is part of the KDE 4 base applications module.

The > KIO Sysinfo:

KIO Sysinfo is a KDE IO Slave, sysinfo:/, used for the 'My Computer' icon on openSUSE desktops. It displays Folders, Hard Disks, Removable Devices, System Information and more to give the user a nice overview.

The > KDE-Apps has various versions of the KIO Sysinfo (some of them might work ).


The KIO Sysinfo (sources from the SUSE svn) seems to work with the Kubuntu

Binaries can be found from the PPA /1/ repositories > Package name contains: kio-sysinfo.

Guys, i installed kinfocenter via apt-get. Its good.

i also installed sysinfo. Its ok.

I installed xsysinfo. Its crap . the next newbie might as well skip it.

then i tried hwinfo. what is good about hwinfo are the options such as;

hwinfo --short -> abbreviated list
hwinfo --mouse -> info abt mouse only

Overall great - except non gui.

Next i tried lshw. Now surprise surprise. lshw has a gtk front end . we have to install package lshw-gtk and execute 'sudo lshw -X' . another useful command is lshw -short.

the interface is a little clunky but ok. a reasonable gui hwbrowser..... !!! at last !!!

Ah, it's probably a long title, if you trim it I guess it will fit? Anyways, no big deal. Thanks for the tip, I will try the gtk version of lshw tonight. Thanks bro!
