laptop display after boot using docking station

I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with a Dell standard docking station with a DVI video output to my LCD monitor. When I boot connected to the docking station, the screen doesn't show (Xwindows fails to detect and active the monitor). When I boot using the laptop screen, all is fine.

How do I boot so that the docking station screen is used by Xwindows?

Some lappies have a hot key that allows to swtich between three stages: LCD only, Lappie only, or both. Have you looked into that? I am not sure how to force the display to be in both at the same time. My eeepc running Kubuntu 8.04 connected to the TV displays in both at the same time by default (if I boot connected to a tv)
