Sound working in gnome, but not in kde

    Hello,
I've been searching around various forums for ages, but I haven't really found a problem quite like this one and was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. My computer is setup with kubuntu and ubuntu. I prefer KDE, and my wife prefers Gnome. I recently upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04 (with an intermediate upgrade through 8.10) Now, however, sound works perfectly fine in Gnome, but has problems in KDE.

When I log in, the startup and shutdown sound plays fine, but any application (audacious, firefox with flash, audacity, etc) I try locks up completely when trying to play sound. Even system-settings multimedia crashes when trying to play a test sound (though this succeeds in playing the sound, but crashes afterwards).

I tried some debugging, but every time I get "no debugging symbols found" and "this backtrace appears to be of no use" errors.

I've tried several guides including http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 but nothing seems to help so far.

Here is some info about my hardware and setup

    I'm using the 32-bit version of kubuntu/ubuntu.

Is there anything else I could try to try and get to the bottom of this? Are there any more guides I could try?

    Thanks for your help

There is a Multimedia entry in System Settings, have you tried there?

Also, make sure that your volume is setup correctly.

      See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6883063.
      KDE, I heart thee.
