Thanks all for the suggestions, but I finally figured it out. I realized the problem was that I had APIC disabled in BIOS. I realized this after the Windows 7 Beta wouldn't install (I am young and need the money). Thankfully I don't have to install windows now! Cheers

my compaq cq40-324TU shows two cores as expected.
