    4gig ram?

    Hi

I've just upgraded my ram to 4gig on an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop with Intel duo core processor. but only about 3gig shows with the 'free' command, searched around and found info about having PAE in the kernel. So Installed Jaunty thinking it might automatically set up for 4gig but command free still showing 3gig. Do i need a particular version of Jaunty If so where can i get it. Or can it be enabled from the command line or am i on the wrong track and just have to make do with my 3gig instead of 4

    Thanx

    Re: 4gig ram?

You need to run the 64-bit OS to have more than 3.x GB of RAM recognized. Be careful -- Intel's CPU nomenclature is confusing -- everything "Duo" is not necessarily a 64-bit CPU. Get your exact CPU model (via lshw, which you'll have to install if you haven't already), then look up that model on Intel's site and confirm that it will support a 64-bit OS.

I still only get the usual ~3.3 GB with the -server kernel. While that'd be better than 3.0 GB, the computer won't wake from suspend to RAM with 4 x 1 GB inserted. And I'd rather have suspend than a few hundred extra MB (try telling that to my ten-years-ago self)

Do you have an integrated graphics chip? If so, it may be sharing RAM.
              # make install --not-war

more about RAM, BIOS, video sharing:

Also, there's a nice graphical + quantitative display in System>Kinfocenter, but you might have to
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install kinfocenter
                  first.
