Audacity records 2 or 3 seconds from usb turntable and stops

I'm using a Sony PS-LX300USB turntable to try to record my records.

The turntable appears as /dev/dsp1, and I access it in preferences as
ALSA:USB ALSA CODEC : USB Audio (hw 1:0).

I've tried the playback setting as both the same and as ALSAefault

Either way, it almost always stops recording after about 2 or 3 seconds (it just went 4, which is unusual.

I'm also not getting audio out while I do this.

When it stops, the record button still shows as "pushed", and the pause button can still push and unpush.

I did get a single session las night where it actually continued running, and I recorded an entire LP.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here.

Audacity is very, very picky. Two years ago, I set up a 78rpm turntable/amp system and captured the 78s, using Audacity.

    - do not run any other package that uses sound, including a browser, before you start audacity

    - be very careful about your file>export -- it always points to the PREVIOUS directory that you used (maybe that is OK for you, it wasn't for me)

    - plan on doing a lot of experiments before your recording system is finalized

p.s. I used a standard analog turntable and amplifier, not a USB -- sorry I can't comment on how that works.

I booted it on another machine with nothing else running (freshly booted for this, too.).

As I bumped the sound dial, the recording froze!

So I killed kmix. It still only runs a couple of seconds.

Is there anything else I need to kill? All that's running is whatever the system defaults are . . .

It occurs to me that PulseAudio is new on the scene since I did my recording project.

Open the System Settings > Multimedia and change the order of sound devices -- move PulseAudio down the list. That might make a difference. Is the ALSA USB CODEC on the list there? If so, move it to the top.

OTOH I can only use USB sound devices by using pulse. Is it possible that audacity can be configured to use pulse?

          Update

Don't know whether this is any help
