Video issues persist despite new repo

I refer to the new repo posted here

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3103779.0

I tried the new repo last night. It didn't help my weedy intel 915 I'm afraid. In fact, it made things worse

Whilst I know it's not the ultimate benchmark GLXgears went down from 1200fps to less than 400fps. Logging out simply resulted in a black screen, as did resume from hibernate, although shut down and restart worked as normal. Removing the new driver (although not the ancillary packages) and replacing it with the default one took me back to how things were before (although I still have no prayer with desktop effects).

Couple of things that occur to me:

My current jaunty installation was an upgrade from Intrepid. Is it possible that there are some settings that have carried forward from intrepid and are messing it up?

From following another thread I noted that my card was shown as having 8mb of "stolen memory". My understanding is that it ought to use much more than this. I also believe that the 8Mb is allocated by the bios but the remainder is meant to be allocated by the OS. In hardy when resetting xorg IIRC there was an option to allocate the memory but that option no longer seems to exist. Has anyone any idea how I will be able to tweak this?

    Thanks

Can you boot a 9.04 Live CD, and test the GLX performance there? If it's way better, then you'll know for certain there's something wrong in the installed system. Maybe see what the settings and xorg.conf file look like in the Live CD session.

Thanks for that but no I haven't as I got the alternate cd and used that as an upgrade source.

Interestingly as in my current setup, I'm getting 1100fps, which is more than I even got in Hardy. The issues I have with it are the flickering through the login screen and whenever I start a wine application funnily enough.

Whilst I seem to be able to enable desktop effects they don't seem to run although 3d screensavers seem OK.

With the updated drivers, the fps dropped to 400 and when I checked enable desktop effects the system simply refused to comply.

Boy do I wish it was possible to upgrade a laptop graphics card! I do confess to having played around with some settings in the xorg.conf file (I have several old backup copies) but I believe the system ignores manual settings in there?

Just got the jaunty live cd.

Video is exactly the same as my current setup. GLX gears about 1100fps, desktop effects checked as enabled but don't do anything. Still at least that tells me that my current setup is as good as it gets

It would seem that you still can't polish the t**d that is my intel 915
