    Re: Mouse trapped in taskbar

well, your partitions should already be set up, so boot up the live CD, go through the install process until it talks about disk partitioning, and choose 'manual'. It should list your partitions. hopefully you will be able to tell which partition is /, /home, etc. double click on your existing '/' partition, and select to format, mount as /, and whatever format you want (ext3 or ext4). Do the same with your /home partition (except select to mount as /home)...only choose to format this partition if you don't mind losing data (as a side note, if you don't have a separate /home partition, now would be a good time to make one...also, if this is the case, you will have to backup any data you want to keep that resides in your /home partition).

The installer should pick up your windows partition, and add it to the grub menu, but if it doesn't, it can be added later.

Above all, use common sense...I typed the above from memory, so if something doesn't seem right, please ask. while I believe the above is correct, I'm not responsible if you lose data. With that being said, I do this every few months, and I've never had problems, unless I'm trying out a different distro.

      mm0 has said it correctly.

For some reason, occasionally the installer detects your prior system in the partition that you previously used as "/", and balks at installing the new files. So, you might want to run GParted (from a GParted Live CD that you make, or otherwise from a booted Linux CD), and "delete" the partition (which renders it "unallocated"), and then make it a "new" partition, formatted ext3 or ext4, and then "Apply". FYI, I installed 9.04 on an ext4 partition and it's been running flawlessly for 2 months, so ext4 seems pretty solid here.

If you do the new installation, don't try "System > Hardware Drivers" -- just let it run as a VESA system and then install the nVidia driver as linked above, and it should work correctly.

Thanks for the good advice. At this point I am not ready to tackle it. After a long day with my granddaughters I am not ready to face anything more difficult than having a bowl of ice cream. Maybe tomorrow after a good night's rest. I do appreciate all of the advice and guidance. To be honest, at this point I wish I had not taken that major upgrade and had just left things alone.
