Quick question and maybe support

I'm thinking about installing kubuntu but I have some concerns as to whether or not kde is going to allow me to enable desktop effects. I have suse installed atm and i could never get them enabled. I'm using a radeon 4850 (i know ati >.<) and any time i'd try to install the drivers for this card it would crash x and leave me with a black screen. Booting into it the screen would go streaky with purple lines and hang. I can get to a command line but anything i've tried has not fixed it. So i'm out of options of for that.

So wondering how well i might be able to get kubuntu to run. Hopefully someone has this same card?

if you card is supported by the new ati driver on www.ati.com then you should be good.
i have a raideon HD4830 and it works wonderfully
