I have suddenly got black flashes on my laptop screen, and after some searching, it seems to be the problem described in this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=612144
However, I solved it in a little different way. I opened the settings for the nVidia driver, went to the DFP-0 setting under GPU 0 and there is a setting called "Flat Panel Scaling". This was on and just to test, I switched it off. Problem gone. At least for now.
When I had the flashes, I noticed that every time the speed of the GPU switched, the screen flashed. I am not an expert on this, but too me it looked like a sync problem while it switched speed/frequency.
I am on a Dell XPS M1210 with an nVidia GeForce Go 7400 chip and using the version 180 driver on Kubuntu 9.04.
Just in case anyone else experience the same.
