I'm having several graphical issues including a shadow appearing over typed works when I have desktop effects enabled. I was wondering if there was a updated driver for Linux available for my graphics card ?

Only the Open Source drivers are available if you are running Jaunty. ATI has dropped driver support for all pre R500 chips (pre radeon2000). 9.3 is the last version to support the X1XXX but will not work for Jaunty since it runs Xorg 1.6 and 9.3 only goes up to Xorg 1.5.
