No Sound on 9.04 with ATI RS780 Azalia

I bought a new laptop HP dv3-1075us. Installed Wubi version of Kubuntu 9.04 and everything seems ok, except I have no sound.
Using "lspci -v" shows the following:

01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
    Memory at d2310000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
    Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
    Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

    Using "aplay -l" gives:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: STAC92xx Digital [STAC92xx Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

It seems the soundcard is detected correctly, but then what is the problem?

I think this might work for you:

Thank you very much! It did the trick. I wonder however what does it do. It apparently tells the system something regarding the intel driver

I'm glad it worked. I'm not sure what it does. I found the solution here: http://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDeb...P/Pavilion_dv7 and had to adapt it for the Jaunty file structure.

Sorry to bump a somewhat old thread but I'm having issues with the sound on my Laptop. It's an HP Pavilion tx2510us.

I hope you'll forgive me, as I'm still new to Linux. I've dabbled with Ubuntu and Kubuntu off and on... but never ever used either as a main OS before. I used to be a pretty avid gamer, so I just stuck to Windows. Since I do not plan to do any gaming on my Laptop- I just threw Kubuntu on it (tried Ubuntu 9.04- but liked Kubuntu more ).

Anyhow... I tried the suggestion about the volume- everything is maxed yet I get no sound from my laptops' integrated speakers. From my limited knowledge- it does appear as if multiple audio devices are listed... the main one seems to simply be listed as "ATI SB HDA". I don't know how to get any sound playback, and would hate to have to purchase external speakers when my laptop has decent integrated speakers.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I'm pretty new to the command prompt (you'll have to forgive my terminology- I'm far more familiar with MS-DOS than I am the Linux terminal *blushes*) in Linux, so if I have to do anything within it then I'll need very precise and explicit directions.

          Thanks again!

A couple of questions for you.

            1. Is you Kubuntu installation fresh from the CD or did you load the kubuntu-desktop from Ubuntu? Ubuntu uses pulse audio with conflicts a bit with the sound configuration Kubuntu uses, Alsa.

            2. How many other sound fixes did you try before the one in the link above? It might be worth a fresh install if you did too many.

            2. In Kmix did you turn the volume all the way up on PCM?

It is a fresh install. Though I might add... last night I installed Ubuntu so I now have them side by side. One partition has Kubuntu, the other one has Ubuntu. As to other sound fixes... I've tried none other than increasing the volume on everything. I'm assuming that Kmix is the mixer in Kubuntu... if so then yes the volume on the PCM is all the way up.

I'm sorry Hildago. I'm a one trick pony. I only have the one solution to sound that I posted. Maybe if you post a new thread someone who knows more linux than I would help you.
