Kubuntu 9.04 on ACER ASPIREONE: VGA/LVDS issue

    Hi All,
I have just installed kubuntu 9.04 on a new brand acer aspireone. I have everything pretty much working, but I have an issue when I connect an external monitor. Actually, a couple of issues:

    1. It does not detect the monitor automatically, I have to go to the display settings and enable VGA output explicitly. Is there any possibility this can be done automatically?
    2. If I select VGA 1024x768 and LVDS 1024x600, VGA is fine, but on the laptop screen , it is like it was 768, but cut at 600 (I loose the last 168 rows). Is this the normal behaviour?

    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Ste

I'm currently dealing with a similar problem but my DVI port isn't detected, but yours may be a simple fix. The first thing to know is what video card/chip is in the laptop nvidia/ATI/intel. The other thing that might be useful is posting the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. What driver are you using the default installed driver, or one of the proprietary drivers? Depending on how deep into it you want to go you could try changing setting through xrandr in terminal using these guides: http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 and http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2 take note the way ports etc are designated varies depending on video card manufacturer. Good luck and hopefully we can get this solved.

      Hi,
thanks for your reply. The video info are:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 015b
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
      Memory at 58480000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
      I/O ports at 60c0 [size=8]
      Memory at 40000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
      Memory at 58500000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
      Capabilities: <access denied>
      Kernel modules: intelfb

and I am using the default driver. I have actually noticed that also under windows I have a similar issue; it is even worse because windows shows both videos at 1024x600, while in Linux I can see the 1024x768 when I am at desk.

It would be great I could fix it, but I would not go into change x settings (I am not that expert).

What I would really like to have now is enable external VGA pressing Fn-F5. Any hint?

      Thanks in advance.

      Stefano
