9.04 no display using radeon 9000 + LG HDTV as monitor

I've recently tried to clean install 9.04 from an 8.04 working install. I've changed my motherboard and processors, but the rest of the machine remains the same.

I've got an ATI radeon 9000 128mb, and when booting from the livecd all I get for display is the TV is an "Invalid Mode" label, when using either the VGA cable or the DVI/HDMI cable.

The TV is 42LG50, so it supports 1080p. An abreviated list of valid TV modes at the end.

It worked before, I believe using the ATI driver.

So I grabbed my CRT, and installed 9.04, and then tried to hook up the TV, but it still doesn't seem to be able to sync with it - on RGB or HDMI.

Do I have to manually create some modelines in xorg.conf to make this TV work? if so - some guidance there would be helpful. if the ATI driver would make things work, then I'll use that, but it seems to be removed by default from the 9.04 install, and i'm not sure how to hook it up. this message written using vista laptop hooked up to TV at 1600x1200.

    any help appreciated.
    thanks.
