Screen resolution corrects as soon as Display - System Settings is run

Hello. I've to a Dell Inspiron 530 (Intel 82G33/G31 onboard graphics). In Insipid - sorry, Intrepid - it wouldn't display at the correct resolution on my CRT monitor and when I used xrandr to correct it, this was installed as an applet which put the resolution right just after KDE started - clunky but it worked (apart from leaving the panel too short).

Now, in Jaunty, I still get 1024x768. This is what xrandr reports:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1680 x 1680
VGA connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 312mm x 234mm
1024x768 85.0*+ 85.0* 75.0 70.1 60.0
1600x1200 60.0
1680x1050 60.0
1600x1024 60.2
1400x1050 74.8 70.0 60.0
1280x1024 85.0 75.0 60.0
1440x900 59.9
1280x960 85.0 60.0
1360x768 59.8
1152x864 100.0 85.1 85.0 75.0 75.0 70.0 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 85.1 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 85.0 75.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
720x400 85.0 70.1
640x400 85.1
640x350 85.1

But as soon as I go to system settings -> display it sets it to 1400x1050 which is what I want:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1680

Unfortunately, it does not persist on reboot.

Anyone else experienced this? Any clues as to how to make it come up correctly in the first place? Many thanks.

I must admit that I'm not sure how to solve your problem in Jaunty! In previous releases (up to and including Idiotic), you could hand edit a file called "/etc/X11/xorg.conf". Unfortunately that file now says:
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
Which leaves me clueless. I suppose you could try to copy your Inferior xorg.conf file to Jaunty. BTW, my display actually WORKS with the Jaunty xorg.conf file.

On a Dell Dimension 2350 (a true POS, BTW) with Kubuntu 9.04 installed and updated, the Intel 845G/GL chip can be set, via KMenu>System Settings>Display to display at 1280x1024, 60Hz on the Dell 772 CRT. But, I could not figure out how to force it to retain that setting -- at the next boot it would come up 1024x768 @85Hz. Strangely, opening Kmenu>System Settings and merely clicking once on the "Display" icon would trigger it to reset to 1280x1024, leaving me only to close the Display panel. So, that's how it is.

Trying to run Google Earth locks it up, btw. glxgears gives a whopping 230 fps.

I have three installations of 9.04 and they all suffer from the same problem. The display only sets to the 'System Settings' value when you click on the display icon in System Settings.

You can edit the xorg.conf file to persist your preferred resolution. Try something like the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. You need the specs on your monitor for horizontal sync and vertical refresh rate frequencies.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "CRT"
HorizSync <range of monitor horizontal sync frequencies>
VertRefresh <range of monitor refresh rates>
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "External Screen"
Device "VGA"
Monitor "CRT"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier	"VGA"
Driver "intel"
EndSection
linux && bash = "the future"

I had the same problem with my install. Went into xorg.config ( in root mode) and changed the virtual setting to what resolution I need. You might try that. ??

Hey, all. It's not really an answer, but I found that if I used the "KRandRTray Screen Resize and Rotate" it puts a widget in my system tray. Then on subsequent start-ups this will set the resolution to my preferred setting.

We shouldn't have to do this, and I never had to do it before.....I've been running Kubuntu for the past two and a half years.

I have other problems too, because I FOOLISHLY bought an ATI X1300PRO video card a couple of years ago. Now when I try to load that driver into Intrepid I get a message that "something" is the wrong version, and the silly thing won't load. So I think my choices are; replace the video card, or downgrade back to Hardy... This will be the LAST ATI PRODUCT I EVER OWN!

OOOOPS meant "Jaunty" not Intrepid.... I should just stick with numbers... :P

Jaunty is MUCH more usable than Intrepid!

Thanks for the tip! The KRandRTray is a fast pseudo-fix. Not what I would like to use, but it saves a couple of clicks after login. Thanks!!!

I think xorg-driver-fglrx driver has some bugs!
I did remove it, so everythings are fine!
apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx
/urs/share/ati/fglrx -uninstall.sh
reboot

Good luck to you!
