Want to send all sound to the headphones, but don't know how.(Solved)

I am using an old Compaq Evo desktop computer to run Jaunty, and now I want to watch a tv show on it. However, my wife is also trying to watch a different show on an identical computer, and none of us know how to pipe the audio from the internal loudspeakers and into headphones. Is there anything in Kmix or otherwise that could help with this?

Klick on the Speaker icon in the system trey.
CLick on the "Mixer" button at the bottom of the popup dialog tht appeared.
    The Mixer panel will appear.
Click on "Settings --> Configure Channels
Click the button on the "Front" channel to check mark it and click "Apply".
The Mixer dialog should now have a channle labled "Front".
Check the "Mute" button. That should disable sound so that it goes only to the headphones.

At least it does on my HDA Intel sound chip.

Actually, I worked this out myself. I opened the mixer panel, clicked "configure shortcuts", changed the "mute on/off" setting from "none" to "input" for the external ampifliers. After that I had all audio in my headphones. Thanks for responding. :-)

mmm... My HDA audio does not have an "external amplifier" option via either the "configure shortcuts" or the "Configure channels".

You might want to look at this, GreyGeek.
          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=314383
          In my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_local I put
          # get headphones working appropriately FRL
          options snd-hda-intel model=vaio

and it causes the speakers to mute when I insert headphones.

            I don't have an /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_local file. Mine is alsa_base.conf.

My sound doesn't auto switch when I insert the headphones jack ...
I have to open the mixer and mute the "Front" channel manually.

According to the URL, which leads to another with a list of all possible settings:

Are you suggesting that the "model=vaio" might work anyway?
And, would I create alsa_local to add that option, or add it to alsa_base.conf?

I've captured the entire list just to have it on this forum's server.

Exactly. If that does not work try the vaio-ar.
