Volume control in kmix not working as expected

PCM and master channels controlled different applications and/or system sounds. If I enabled pulse audio i got a notification that said, "PULSE AUDIO NOT WORKING, FALLING BACK TO HDA INTEL...". The fix for me was following this guide:
