    Leaping mouse

Every few minutes, my mouse pointer leaps over to a side of the screen, without my having moved it there. This can be quite annoying, for instance, when one is tring to select something in Gimp.

This problem is not specific to JJ, as I had it before in II, but I am now running JJ alpha 4 and it is still there.

Anybody elss see such a thing?

    Re: Leaping mouse

I've had this happen in Windows. So I think it's an issue with the hardware. Maybe you're using an optical mouse on a wooden surface?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

      Re: Leaping mouse

It's an optical mouse which I'm using on a piece of clear plastic with a photo under it. I'll try with something else.

What is the best sort of mouse pad to use with an optical mouse? I tried a printed page (with lots of space -- in fact, my bank statement!) and got very strange behavior.

      Thanks for your suggestions.

is it wireless? If so, here is a few more things to try:

        1) replace the batteries -and/or-
        2) move the reviever...might have interference...

          No, it's not wirelss.

I'm trying a different pad. It _seems_ to work better. More later.

          Thanks.

Yeah, that won't work. I've got a glass-topped work stand in front of my computer, and I have to put my optical mouse on a paper tablet or something like that -- or else it will jump crazily, if it moves at all.
