I tried running the Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha 2 Live CD on my Thinkpad T41,
using a older Kensington "Expert Mouse" 4 button trackball connected
via a KVM switch to the laptop's serial port. I've used this
combination in the past. It works fine with Kubuntu 8.10 and with
earlier versions of Ubuntu, for example.
The problem I'm having on the alpha is that the pointer moves quite
slowly. I've always had to increase the pointer acceleration some with this
trackball (6, for example, with Kubuntu 8.10). With the alpha, though,
even if I up the pointer acceleration to 20 (which appears to be the
maximum allowed) and knock down the pointer threshold to 1, the pointer
moves slowly enough to be annoying and marginally useful. Knocking the
threshold down to 0 makes it move so quickly that it's totally
unusable.
Other devices that I tried (the integrated Trackpoint and a somewhat
more sensitive USB trackball) worked as before.
What's changed and how do I get back to the old behavior?
As long as we're on the topic, it would be nice if there were a way to
get an acceleration function that was more gradual than the off/on
option currently available (Hey! I can dream.). It looks like it would
make pointer motion smoother and it would certainly improve the
usability of devices like this that need an acceleration boost.
