    it auto updated to 4.2?

I just noticed last night that my laptop was running kde 4.2.0!

I never did any special update/upgrades! I guess the update has been considered recommended?

In that case will it eventually go to 4.2.2? If that is so will there be much point for me to go through the hassle of upgrading to Kubuntu 9.04 when it comes out?

If you enabled "unsupported updates" in Adept (the backports repository) you will get 4.2.0, this repo in disabled by default.

It is unknown if there will be 4.2.2 in Intrepid, but IK think it is very likely

The 4.2.packages are 'backported' from Jaunty back down to Intrepid. Jaunty has QT 4.5, and Intrepid has an earlier version, so you will notice a definite speed improvement in Jaunty. Upgrading is up to you

I do not have unsupported updates enabled........

When booting it says kde 4.1 however if I go to the about on some programs like kate or dolphin it says using kde 4.2.0

or konqueror it says version 4.1.4(kde 4.1.4) using kde 4.2.0

I dunno, as the only way to get 4.2.0 on Intrepid is to enable the backports repo :
          http://kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2

or perhaps they are from some other repository you have?

mmm... I just took a look and I am running KDE 4.2.2.

I've been updating every time the notifier tells me there are updates waiting.
