    Re: kubuntu 8.10 hangs

    Hi,

smartmontools installed. sudo smartctl -ia /dev/sda --> no errors logged.
    sudo fdisk -lu command --> /dev/sda4 63 1028159 514048+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
quite different form eammer. Don't know what that means.
    sure will try elephant trick.

      Re: kubuntu 8.10 hangs

I have exactly, absolutely exactly the same problem. Keyboard stops responding, mouse cursor moves, but mouse buttons also not working. Happens a few times a day.

I have HP laptop with Core2Duo and Intel GM965, and I use Ubuntu 8.10 with Gnome. Same thing happens with Compiz, Metacity and Openbox.

So scratch hardware and window manager from the list. What have Kubuntu and Ubuntu in-common? My guess it`s Xorg`s fault.

The questions is how can we fix this.

        je, je

        sound funny.
on Friday it hanged, but didn't realized if it was "totally" hanged or not before I tried the elephant trick (alt+SysRq and r s e i u b) and afterwards realized that it wasn't stopped although worked very very very slowly.

Actually, I think it wasn't hanged. I think it was very very busy

The funny thing. Today it hanged, totally, but the keyboard was working as the mouse is. Although the system is blocked and the screen keeps frizzed.

        Have a good day.

          Hi guys,

Not sure if this helps but on my laptop, Lenovo X61s, the default Xorg works nicely and it has the very same graphics chip. Perhaps you could try to disable (in the BIOS?) whatever peripherals are connected, if any?

            Re: kubuntu 8.10 hangs

No other peripherals are connected except bluetooth mouse, but hangs regardless of it.

Previously was using OpenSuse 11.0 and didn`t had this problem. So definitely it`s not a hardware problem.

It happens with Metacity, Openbox, Compiz and KWin, so it`s not a window manager problem.

Other people are complaining on different hardware so it`s not a graphic driver problem.

When it hangs everything works in the background as it should, so probably it`s not Kernels fault too.

My only guess is that it`s Xorg`s fault. Can we change it other than update it, because my system is totally updated. Perhaps upgrade from some repository of still untested but newer branch of Xorg?

              NO WAY

              Hi,
No way. Nothing works. I keep hanging (today three times in an hour).
Too many reset. I lost all the settings of my desktop (widgets, notes and so on)
Good for cleaning, but feel the crush is close.

You could make a 9.04 Live CD, boot that and let it run a few hours. Might give you an idea if the problem exists in 9.04. Daily build images are here:

As for me, I'm going to wait until Jaunty comes out.... then reformat the whole thing and see what happens.

                    Hi,
I have reinstalled Kubuntu 8.10. I discover there was a whole world apart from windows this January when I installed Kubuntu first. Some problems during the installation, but want to keep trying. And I am quite sure I had no this problem (hanging) at first, so must be something I did afterwards.
I will try to update and install programs slowly until I find the key.
Could be and update, could be Ansys, who knows? But today no hanging.
                    Good luck eammer.

                      IO was wrong.
                      It hanged again.

                        Hello again!
Well, as I promised, I formatted the Hard drive and fresh-installed Jaunty... and guess what??
                        It's still hanging.

                        Ta-daaa!

                          Hi,

Sorry eammer, but I upgrade to Jaunty end have no problems. I am installing all the software and language support I need step by step, giving some days between to check if there are problems.

                          It stopped hanging.

                          good luck

Well, good to hear you solved your problem.
I'm looking forward to buy a new harddisk (sata) to see if that solves the problem.
By the way, did you use ext3 or the new ext4? I haven't experimented with ext4 yet, maybe that'd make a difference.

@eamner, the only thing that reformatting or replacing the hard drive will do for you is to fix a broken filesystem, and I don't see any evidence that your freezes are related to a filesystem issue -- we verified that your swap is working, right?

I think it's a video issue, but I'm not sure what the problem is. Have you tried the newer 180.51 driver that is recommended for your GeForce 7 series card?

                                Hi,
I said that I am not an expert, so the I choose ext2 with Intrepid and keep on ext 2 for Jaunty. Is there a great difference? My knowledge is short in this field.
                                Thank you.
