desktop goes off the screen

i installed kubuntu on a friends laptop and when i come to the desktop or login its expanded off the screen.

If this means that you see a small section of the desktop and that moves with the mouse you probably have a virtual resolution much larger than the actual resolution. This probably means you need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

the desktop doesnt follow the mouse i have to move the mouse off the screen to get to the kmenu

i tried reinstalling since i cant find anything on this but it didnt work

do you know what video card, and do you have the right driver installed?

its a via/s3g unichrome pro igp and idk how to check what drivers its using

not sure, but I had problems the only time I ever used a via card...I hope someone that has experience can chime in...if not, you might want to repost with the video card in the subject line, to get some specific help...
