(SOLVED) Olympus CAMEDIA D 565 or a card reader

Does anyone know for sure if an Olympus CAMEDIA D 565 Zoom 4.0 Megapixel digital camera will work with gPhoto or any other program in Linux? I looked at the list of compatible cameras in gPhoto, but the D 565 isn't on the list.
Thankx for any help.

PS. I was wondering if Linux can't read from the camera could I use a USB 2.0 card reader instead?

I don't know if it will work for your camera, but DigiKam worked nicely for my old Olympus C2100UZ. That DigiKam is also a very nice package, in my opinion second to only Photoshop Lightroom (which has a very significant price tag), only makes it better.

Thankx for your help Troberg. I installed DigiKam. Your camera is on the list in DigiKam but the Olympus D 565 I'm thinking of buying isn't on the list in gPhoto and DigiKam so I don't know if they will work with it.

Does it have a USB mass storage mode, in which case you should be able to access it via Dolphin?

I don't know what kind of protocol it has. I looked at the manual but it doesn't say anything about a USB mass storage mode nor PTP.

The memory for these Olympus cameras seems to cost a lot more then it does for Canons. I'm trying to do this on the cheap so I think I'll look for a Canon that's on the list in DigiKam.

Try to contact Olympus, sometimes cameras are sold under different names in different markets, so it might be on the list even if you don't see it. Canon does this a lot, the EOS 350D I have s called Rebel XT in some markets.

They should also know if it supports USB Mass Storage or PTP.

You should also try with some "relatives" of that camera, ie cameras in the same product family, although of a slightly different model. Camera makers don't write the software from scratch in every model, chances are good that the communication bits are the same.

From your last thread I assume you don't actually have the camera yet?

Bear in mind that the cameras listed for gphoto are simply those that are adequately supported eg for download within linux apps. There are loads of others that will support usb connection that are not listed. I've had a couple myself, one of which was an Olympus.

Reading a review of the target camera it does suggest "auto - connect" USB which does suggest it might be plug and play. I don't think the xd card plays nicely with Linux though, certainly I can't access that type of card on my laptop. So if you are looking to hedge your bets you might be better with a camera that works from SD card.

If you have a laptop you could be cheeky and take it into the shop?

Troberg and The Liquidator thankx for your help. Ok, a friend of a friend told me he uses a different distro based on Kubuntu and has DigiKam installed and he can plug in any digital camera and it just works. He said I won't have any problems with an Olympus made in 2004.

So, I'll just buy the Olympus and see if it works. If it doesn't work I'm only out $35.00. Then I'll have to pay $60.00 for a Nikon from 2006. I never had these problems with film.

That's pretty much my experience with Kubuntu/DigiKam as well. I have five cameras of various makes, models and years, four of them requiring special software in Windows, and they all just worked in Kubuntu.

Agreed! I've never had a digital camera where I could not at least access the files via the file manager, if not by direct import into Digikam.

Ok, I bought the camera today on ebay. So, as soon as I get it I'll try it out and let you know if it works. I should get it in 4 or 5 days.

This is amazing! It's working ET! It's working!

I just plugged in the USB cable that came with the camera, pressed the Quick View button on the camera, the hard drive started working, Gnome found the camera on the USB port and asked me which app I wanted to open. F Spot Photo Manger was the default so I used that.

F Spot found the pictures in the XD memory card and made thumbnails of them. I copied the picture to my hard drive and that was it. Done!

This is amazing! Just shoot, download, done! I sure like this a whole lot better than developing film and prints with chemicals. I'm going to go do some more shoot, download, done now. This is amazing!

P.S. You're probably wondering why I'm using Gnome. I'm not too crazy about KDE 4 yet. Once it's finished I'll probably just use KDE.
