ufs or ext3 for shared FreeBSD and Kubuntu home directories

OK, it's been over ten years. FreeBSD and linux used to not play nice with one another's file systems on extended rw use--one would fubar the other's disklabel, and the other dumped random data into files . . .

anyway, with a machine I share with my kids, and me primarily using freebsd, and them kubuntu, does anyone have experience on which fs can better handle being shared.

(OK, the longterm solution should be zfs on a dedicated opensolaris box serving /home as nfs, but that's three hard disks and a low power dedicated system away . . .
