I tried the script, and the number of warnings and errors had decreased substantially. I still got the following warnings, though:

I know that the "deb.mulx.net" lines are tied to PlayOnLinux.

However, when I tried to find and add the (new?) gpg keys for that and the medibuntu lines, the previous error and warning messages returned.

Don't I?
I usually see them listed with the "regular" items (such as with the to-be-uncommented lines in Sources.list). Are they not necessary?

The Sources are mostly for those who have heavily modifed systems. The average user will never download any source packages.

Using the Source Packages, you might be able to add in extra features, or increase performance on your system. However, it is not a simple task to do so.

1) If you don't know why you are downloading Source Code then don't download it/them. Uncheck the three boxes in Synaptic that say "Source Code"

2) The Medibuntu Repository also has a GPG key and won't work without it. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Me...20Repositories which tells you how to install Medibuntu. NOTE that it is a two part install 1) Install the repository 2) Add the GPG key - you do this by inputting the given command into a Terminal.

is a network name resolving error. It is telling you that it can not find the host 'us.archive.ubuntu.com' .

Is your network so busy that you can not get a response before it times out? Try
ping -c 4 us.archive.ubuntu.com

and see if it works. Since this seems to be transient it is probably an unstable network.

Sometimes, there can be as many as 5 computers on the wireless network, so I suppose the busy network theory might be plausible. However, that I'm using the Ethernet connection, have low(?) ping times, and have this occur when mine is the only computer that should be actively on the network, should that still be an issue? If the network itself were unstable, how would I go about testing and stabilizing it?

Have you seen various reports that the server can be down e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/332369. If you just click on the link, highlighted in blue, it does not go anywhere (at the moment)

Very good question. Numerous books have been written on that subject.

I would suggest that you simplify as much as possible to see if you can get to a stable situation.

If you have both wireless and ethernet, disable one so you are using only one. If you have multiple ethernet interfaces, disable one so you are using only one.

Does ifconfig show tx or rx errors?

You can create a /etc/apt/soucres.list file which has numeric IP addresses rather than names. This will do away with the need for name resolution. If this works you need to look at your resolver.

What do you have in /etc/resolv.conf? Have you installed a cacheing name server? Is you router acting as a nameserver?

Very good question. Numerous books have been written on that subject.

In the directory "/etc/resolvconf", there is a sub-directory called "update-libc.d" that contains a shell script called "avahi-daemon".

At this point, the list of errors is much smaller than it once was (and, sometimes, there are no errors!), so it's probably something to do with my connection to the particular servers at any given time.

Actually you are seeing exactly what I expected. You have wired ethernet (eth0) and wireless (wlan0) configured to be in the same subnet (both 192.168.0.x). It is quite likely that each of these has a default route specified and each interface has the same metric so your network is confused as to how it should contact hosts that are not part of the 192.168.0.0 subnet. Should it go through eth0 or wlan0.

The output of "route" would indicate something about this, but my guess is it has been hanging when you try to run it, which is only more indication of confusion.

Try this "sudo ifconfig eth0 down" and then run
"sudo aptitude update"

My guess is it will work entirely now. Then you can start to think about how to configure your system so it has ethernet when available and wifi when it needs to. The answer is wicd.

By the way you also have a file /etc/rexolv.conf on your system that looks something like this
~ $cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain gateway.2wire.net
search gateway.2wire.net
nameserver 192.168.0.100

You also have the avahi system which is supposed to provide working networking among systems that are not really setup for networking, but that should be of no concern for your purpose.

I've heard of wicd, and considered switching to it in the past, but I've heard both good and bad things about it and I'm a bit wary/apprehensive of having it uninstall the tried-and-proven network manager and replacing it with something that might not work at all without having some sort of backup.
