[SOLVED] Cannot upgrade to KDE 4.2

    Hi All,

Not more than 2 weeks ago I've been installing Kubuntu 8.10 on my laptop. One of the first things I've done was upgradeing to KDE 4.2. I followed these instructions: http://www.blog.arun-prabha.com/2009...810-to-kde-42/
If I remember good the same instructions were here:
    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2.
    Everything upgraded without any problem.

    But...

Today I installed the same Kubuntu on my desktop and the first thing which I wanted to do was upgrading to KDE 4.2. I followed mentioned instruction (used Adept Installer). (BTW. Following instructions on http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2 lead to nothing. Has it changed? Description is not full. There is no word about ppa repository and pgp keys.
First time I tried sys tray adept upgrader and choosen apply changes from menu (did it automatically without carrying for anything ) The result was that after reboot there was no KDE at all.

OK. Im on the beginning, so... Let's reinstal it from scratch.
Did the same as above, but before 'apply changes' i looked at what will be done and saw that almost all packets are marked to be REMOVED!. I tried to change to upgrade. When I changed 1st one to 'upgrade' it was changed. But when I changed 2nd one the first one automaticaly reverted from 'upgrade' to 'remove'! I cannot set all of them to 'upgrade'. So I think my problem is somewhere here...

    Can somebody help me, please?

Re: Cannot upgrade to KDE 4.2

I ran into this problem recently myself--The solution for me was to add the intrepid-backports repository to get 4.2 running (whereas before you only needed the ppa).

You can do this by uncommenting the appropriate line in your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ubuntu.media.mit.edu/ubuntu/ intrepid-backports restricted main multiverse universe

..or by selecting the right repository in adept--I think it's called "recommended updates" there.

Re: Cannot upgrade to KDE 4.2

It all depends on dates. Earlier to update to KDE 4.2 you needed to add ppa, and now they've moved it to backports, so you no longer need to add the ppa (and it's gpg) to your "Third-Party Software" tab in Adept, or in your sources.list if you did it by hand.

As lcampagn said, now its possible by enabling the backports, just a little correction "Recommended updates" is on by default and KDE 4.2 isn't there, in Adept go to Update tab and check "Unsupported updates" (package list will be fetched automatically) and then click on "Preview" then "Upgrade" button and there should be a lot of packages to upgrade/install. Just be carefull to remove the named koffice package and plasmoids as http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2 says and it should all be fine.

      Good luck
