Kubuntu 8.10 freezes almost instantly apon startup, with 1.25gb ram!

    First, here are my specs:

    Dell Dimension 2400
    1.25gb RAM
    Intel P4 2.40Ghz

    Now, the problem:

(I am dual booting WinXP, which I'm using now, and Kubuntu 8.10)

Ok, so I start up Kubuntu, type in my username and pass...

If I click on the HD icon as soon as it appears, it brings me to my desktop, if I wait longer it freezes as the other icons try to load.

WHEN/IF I get to my desktop the system almost instantly freezes, with the exception of my cursor, which can move about but do nothing more.

I thought it may have been a bad install, so I re-installed using the ALT disk, same effect.

    Whats going on?!

    Thanks.

The graphics card is the on-board Intel Extreme Graphics card.. Not good, I know, but I installed Vista fine on my girlfriends e-machines with this same card and less ram and it worked fine. I figured if that worked KDE 4.2 shouldn't be a problem with the 1.25gb of ram...

As for how the partitions are set up, I don't know specifics because I'm at work in my police cruiser at the moment... It is a 80gb harddrive with win xp partiton using 9.6gb. When I installed Kubuntu, I selected use largest amount of free space, so it created those partitions with the other 70ish gb.

Ubuntu ran fine on this machine, btw. If I reinstall ubuntu and then install KDE 4 do you suppose I'd have the same problem?

      Thanks

If you don't mind reinstalling, then go for it. That way you can at least see if it is purely KDE related or not. That's actually the route I went when installing ubuntu.
