How can I size my system tray widget in KDE 4.2. I need to reduce the length. It takes up 2/3 of the panel (I don't know how I managed that!)

Re: Sizing the system tray widget
I've observed several weird behaviors with the 4.2 panel and tray -- I think maybe there are some unfinished bugs:
- if I park icons for frequently-used packages on the panel, sometimes the mouse cursor does not align with the icon to be launched -- it is one or two icons "off" horizontally
- sometimes I can close a package, but the tray shows it still open
- with lots of packages running, sometimes the panel has trouble adjusting to the full screen width, and kind of "oscillates" between two states of horizontal size

Re: Sizing the system tray widget
I got around those issues by splitting my panels up into taskabar, systray, applications:

Re: Sizing the system tray widget
Here is an example/test with the panelspacer >KDE-Look / Panel Spacer
A panel with only System Tray and two panelspacer plasma-widgets. System Tray is in the middle of the panel, between the panelspacers.
From the panelspacer Readme file
Panel Spacer Plasmoid :
This plasmoid let you put some blank space between the other applets located in a panel.
You can set a minimum fixed size and/or allow the spacer to stretch if there is free space
on the right. Optionaly, you can display a thin separator line.
This is useful if you want to place a plasmoid on the right in a panel, if you want to do
logical groups of icons in your panel, etc.
0.3 - A lot of code refactoring
Added theming support for the separator. See SVG_THEMING for details.
Any artist contribution to the default artwork is more than welcomed
Temporary screenshot here : http://danakil.free.fr/linux/panelspacer_svgtheming.jpg (need artwork !!)
0.2 - Better calculation of the remaining blank space
0.1 - Initial version
From the PPA >Show PPAs matching: panelspacer (plasma-widget-panelspacer (0.3~svn933836~jaunty~ppa1))

Re: Sizing the system tray widget
I have exactly same problem: the system tray is far too big.
The strange thing is that I have upgraded from intrepid on 4 machines but only one of them has this problem.
Overall though I'm beginning to get the hang of KDE 4 now and am beginning to like it............

Re: Sizing the system tray widget
I seem to have just discovered the reason and cure fore the system tray far too big problem
It seems to be because the task manager widget is missing
Add the Task Manager widget to the panel, and the system tray drops down to normal size.
Worked for me anyway! (Discovered by comparing the installed widgets between two machines, one with the problem and one without)

Re: Sizing the system tray widget
you should do the spacer approch as that should keep it no larger then required by the icons.
also you can also right click on the system tray and set some icons hidden ones that you don't use often such as the klipper, the wallet tool and kmix that will shorten it be at least 3 items and you can click to expand to see all, that should get it to be even smaller..
