won't restart

Hi all

This is actually a thread I started over at the Ubuntu forum.. but the same thing is happening on my Kubuntu drive which is what I boot into most of the time now. The thread has been quickly been relegated as happens a lot unless I bump it.
I swapped out my motherboard for an AM2 board, all worked fine until I tried to restart ,everything goes as it should but no restart ? Monitor goes into standby but the PC is still running.This also happens with the reset button .Anyway I thought re install so I did on a spare small drive. Restart worked fine until I did an update and then no go .
What can I do to resolve this ?

Well it's difficult to say, unless you provide more information about your system,
especially architecture, drives, partitions and Grub (or LILO) configuration, also
please mention other systems (like M$, oh I hate those dirty words !) that might
be present on your system and on which partition(s).
Please also state what you mean by "won't restart" (messages and all).
In my experience Linux and especially (K)Ubuntu works pretty fine on all
Intel based systems (I stopped using other OSes in the late nineties).

Sorry I should have been more clear.
The system is AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core AM2 CPU ,Foxconn 6150M2MA mainboard, two drives one Kubuntu one Ubuntu both 8.10 grub boot loader,(I boot into each distro via boot menu in the bios) no M$ (I keep that well away in a dusty box

"Wont restart" =
This happened on a working install of Ubuntu 8.10 and Kubuntu . I just reinstalled on a spare drive to see if it was something to do with changing the motherboard.Re installing Ubuntu the restart worked before I updated. Also its not the switch as this happens from the shutdown/restart option on the main panel as well as the reset button on the PC. Ubuntu goes to shut down as normal the monitor goes into standby but the PC keeps running.

Oh yeah shutdown via the main panel works fine
What do you reckon ?

Cor man I'm really confusing, sorry

There is a grub boot loader on each drive . I just have not got around to dual booting . So right now There is only the Kubuntu drive present in the system. I use the boot menu in the bios if I need to boot into the second drive. Alwaays messin with lots of distros so its easy just do it that way.

There is a grub boot loader on each drive . I just have not got around to dual booting . So right now There is only the Kubuntu drive present in the system. I use the boot menu in the bios if I need to boot into the second drive. Alwaays messin with lots of distros so its easy just do it that way.

OK.

If you exit the X server (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and log in at the console, can you then issue

sudo shutdown -h now

and have it shut down correctly?

Yeah shutting down is not problem ,I can do that via Kmenu >leave >shutdown.
its Kmenu>leave>restart or reset via the reset button on the front of my case that's not happening.
Will put another distro (Mandriva) on a drive tomorrow and see if its a (K)Ubuntu thing or just something on this new board thats not configured . I have tried optimal settings in the bios but that makes no difference

bossa, the reset button on your machine should be equivalent to switching the machine off and on again. If that's not working I'd point to a hardware problem.

Hi barbolani

The reset button (hardware) works during post .When logged into Kubuntu neither the Hardware or software reset/restart work correctly. I tried a drive with Mandriva from another machine but that would not boot ,but I can confirm that both options work in windows. I threw in a drive with Vista on it and reset/restart worked fine

Yeah When I get chance I will reinstall Mandriva on a drive and see what happens. its not such a big deal but its a drag having to use the on /off switch on the PSU

Unfortunately if the motherboard designer tweaked the power control circuitry/logic in a non-standard way, and then tweaked his Windows driver to accommodate it, there may not be fix for it in Linux. Once in a while a bit of hardware is discovered that simply won't play with Linux -- it requires its own Windows driver to work in Windows, and that's all there is.

Also, it is sometimes necessary to compile a module for one Linux kernel, where another distribution has compiled the module in the kernel. For example, on an Asus P5Q board there is an Attansic ethernet chip that the *buntu 2.6.27 kernel does not support -- you have to compile a module yourself to run it. But another distro that I use has the module already in the kernel. But, you would have to figure out which power-control device on your motherboard is not performing correctly, and then find Linux source code for it -- gets really technical pretty fast. :P
