Cant get to desktop

Hello

Having problems with my Ibex install. Had it for about 3 months, no serious problems. However, each time I have had Kernel updates via normal updating, I have not been able to get back into my 'X'. It goes to shell and runs fsck by itself, finds errors and eventually I can get back into X. But this time, I can only get into my login screen and it won't go past. I sign in but it acts like I am going to get to the desktop but it keeps coming back into the login screen. Tried a reboot, but no dice, same thing. Any help will be appreciated. Like kubuntu, but have had trouble since the start any time a normal kernel upgrade comes along. I certainly would like to fix this problem though.

Thanks for the reply. Just for clarity, it is not after every update, just kernel updates. Am at work right now, will try what you recommend when I get home this evening.

I don't know what your previous update issue were about, but currently, you may have experienced the same thing my son has. See my post in another thread at http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3101895.0

Thanks for the link. Tried to reinstall desktop, could not log into root. Ended up restarting into the recovery mode. Went to package fixer or whatever and somehow ended up with KDE 4.2 by accident. Now I can get to my desktop and everything is the same but I have more problems.

Many things will not work correctly. Knetwork manager wont come up. Adept or Synaptic won't start. Firefox window won't maximize and cant see menu's. I guess what I am saying is, how do I install KDE 4.1 again?( Unless someone knows how to get 4.2 working.)
