I am sorry, Snowhog. But, I tried your suggestion and that didn't change anything. I have tried various approaches with the given suggestion, and the Desktop remains with the default background. Other ideas, please?

        Thank you,

Hmm. Well, it's supposed to work.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Well it seems though, that most options start with right-click->Desktop settings.
From there, the most flexible option seems to ensure, first, that "image"' is selected
in the first combo-box and then click on the floppy icon beside and navigate through
the file system to find the picture you really want.
Afterwards, depending on your desktop resolution an chosen image size, you can
adjust the "positioning" combo to a suitable value.
            Kind regards

              Paul,

              This isn't helpful.

Yes, I get the dialog box that shows folders to select a new picture. However, I do have have a picture *that I am aware of* to select. I am trying to install the previewable backgrounds that are listed in this setting.

                Thanks,

Check that you have the following packages installed: kdebase-workspace-wallpapers and kdewallpapers.

But judging by all the problems you've been posting, my gut feeling says that your installation is really messed up and traditional fixes are probably not what's needed.
