This is likely just that terminals don't echo anything on the screen when you type in a password...just type your password normally and press enter and it should work (even though nothing is shown when you type)

Did you get any error messages when running the commands?
You may also browse through the thread I mentioned earlier (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3101481.0), there are some heavier hammers introduced in the end.

At least on Jaunty (and possibly in intrepid KDE4.2) knetworkmanager doesn't start automatically anymore, since it's in the process of being replaced by network manager plasma widget. You should be able to start it by running 'knetworkmanager' (with Alt+F2, for example)...you can also create an autostart item for it if you wish to start it automatically.

This is intrepid, and it *did* start automatically until this happened.

At the moment, that laptop is dead in the water, probably permanently

I never said it didn't, just that it doesn't on KDE4.2 (the autostart .desktop item was removed)...you likely installed the KDE4.2 upgrades (from intrepid-backports).

        1. Did you try starting knetworkmanager manually (alt+f2)
        2. If that fails, you can connect to a network manually (without knetworkmanager), although for instructions more information is needed (wired or wireless connection, contents of /etc/network/interfaces etc.)
        3. Once you're online, it's just a matter of fixing the upgrade gone sour. A "sure fire" fix would be to reinstall whole KDE4.2 (removing kdelibs5 and then installing kubuntu-desktop). There are less drastic ways to try a fix, but the above should work "no matter what".

Re: RESOLVED: Upgrade 22 Feb destroys windows functionality

With all of this, I'm just wondering what I did... RIGHT! I tried in Console on booting up the various codes suggested. Somewhere along the line, I must have got the new version because my desktop changed to the white bubbles on blue, which design comes with the new version of KDE. I still had problems with Terminal and root passwords, but when I used [on a whim, because it seemed that there was some mix-up with the order of install and reinstall in the advice] sudo apt-get - - install kde-window-manager all of my problems were solved, including access to the Package Managers and Terminal. I had been having problems with the upgrade icon being hidden, but I even have a system tray again: it's not on the task bar, but I've re-located it on the desktop.

          Thanks,

          Jim

Re: RESOLVED: Upgrade 22 Feb destroys windows functionality

After trying all the suggestions above & only achieving a partial success by reinstalling the window manager, I found the following instructions cleared up all the problems I had been having:

            Code:
            sudo apt-get clean
            (clears apt-get cache)
            Code:
            sudo apt-get purge kdelibs5
            (removes code causing the problems)
            Code:
            sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
(reinstalls code in a working form)

I now have a happy, fully working copy of kubuntu 810 with kde 4.2.
It includes a system tray containing Knetworkmanager, Klipper and KMix.
Plasma seems to work well now.
Most of my settings and preferences seem to have carried across OK, though I don't go in for extreme customisation.

Overall, now I've finally got it all working, I am pleased with the results.

It would be educational to know why people like myself have had such problems with this update.

I now have the daunting task of updating my partners PC!!

Please keep fingers crossed for me

            Bob
