Re: Intrepid with KDE 4.2 -- Google Earth 5 shows logo and tip of the day and exits

    Open a Konsole and enter
    googleearth

Report back what messages you see that might explain why it wouldn't run.

      Here is what it said:

      /usr/lib/googleearth/googleearth-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/googleearth/
      libssl.so.0.9.8: undefined symbol: EVP_idea_cbc

        Could be.
I installed GoogleEarth in my home account. Here is where my copies of libcrypto.so.0.0.8 are located:

        jerry@jerry-sonylaptop:~$ locate libcrypto
        /home/jerry/google-earth/libcrypto.so.0.9.8_old
        /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        /lib/i486/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        /lib/i586/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        /lib/i686/cmov/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        /usr/lib/libcrypto.a
        /usr/lib/libcrypto.so
        /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libcrypto.pc
        /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8/libcrypto.so.0.9.8
        jerry@jerry-sonylaptop:~$
Notice that the first one is the one I changed.

So you changed your libcrypto that is inside the GoogleEarth folder, which is also what I did. But you changed yours to _old, and I changed mine to .bak, which gives me the above error.

I tried changing it back to the way it was originally, and GoogleEarth will start and run for a few seconds after it shows the tip of the day.

Should I change my libcrypto to _old also?

No, it doesn't mater what you name it to, as long as you change its name. You could even move it to another folder, not in the PATH, or delete it... the effect is the same.

Since GoogleEarth won't be able to find libcrypto.so.0.9.8 under its install directory, after it has been renamed, moved or deleted, it is forced to use the one of the versions installed in /lib or /usr/lib.

The real difference between your system in regards to GoogleEarth is that I downloaded the latest verson from Google and ran it as me, not root, and installed it under my home account. Then I renamed the crypto file. I did NOT use the repository in this case.

Ok, so when I change my libcrypto in the GoogleEarth folder, GoogleEarth still doesn't start up. Why would changing it work for other people but not for me?

Do I need to do this too?

So the libcrypto file you changed before wasn't the one in the googleearth subdirectory? Then reverse the changes to it. In a konsole:

                cd /usr/lib/googleearth
                mv libcrypto.so.0.9.8.bak libcrypto.so.0.9.8

It is never a good idea to change files that were installed via the repository, because the repository and local cache won't know what you've done and they will expect to see the original file name in the directory where it was installed.

If you want to get googleearth working the way I did then use Synaptic to locate the googlearth installed file and right-mouse its green box and select "complete removal" and apply.

Then, go to the google site and download the GoogleEarth 5.0 for Linux to a subdirectory in your home account and then double click on it. It will be installed in /home/yourhomeaccout/google-earth. Also in that directory will be another executable called "uninstall", if you ever want to uninstall this version of GoogleEarth.

                  GreyGeek,

Thanks for all your help. Now I have a new problem!

Ok, I uninstalled 4.2 using Adept, which is how I got it. Then I downloaded 5.0 from Google to my home directory, but when I double click on it, it opens in Kate, instead of installing. It's a .bin file. Is there a different format I should be downloading? Or something else I should try?

                  Thanks!

Ah, that's either due to the mime settings or that the bin file you downloaded is not marked as executable.

Either way, you can use the CLI or Dolphine to set the executable bit on the bin file.

                    CLI:
Open a konsole and cd to the google-earth directory that was created under your home account.
                    Then issue
chmod +x googleearth.bin (or what ever its name is ... I forget)
                    Then
                    ./googleearth.bin
                    to run it.

                    Or, open Dolphin
Navigate to the directory containing the bin file. Right click on it and chose the "Properties" option at the bottom of the popup dialog. When the Properties dialog opens select the "Permissions" tab. On the Permissions tab check the "Executable" checkbox.
                    Close the dialog.
Then double-click on the bin file from Dolphine.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

My computer is now running Google Earth 5.0!

Plus, I learned some good stuff in the process!

Sorry to interrupt you but I have the same problem as you originally stated. I installed it from the repository. The icon/globe bounces around and there is the tab at the bottom but then both disappear.

                        What should I do next?

I tried both the Terminal method and the Dolphin File Manager method.

                          No deal.

I try with Dolphin and it still wants a program to open with.

The terminal method just didn't work. I type out the bin file name and nothing will execute. It's as if no change happened.

Did you include "./" ahead of the name? (Tells the exectuor to look in the current directory.
Did the "secondlife" script have its execute permission on? (BY default it should have, but one never knows how folks install stuff)

There needs to be another way to install and run Google Earth.

It's ridiculous. All I get is:

                              Code:
                              bash: googleearth: command not found
If it doesn't work, then I won't use it. I still have a Windows partition and I'm sure it will run there if I needed it.

You have to go to the folder where you installed it and type ./googleearth, not just googleearth . Or just run it from dolphin.
