The new KMail insists on grouping my email by the date on which the message arrived. This is extremely annoying, and despite quite some time invested in googling for an answer, I still can't seem to turn it off. Help?

There are five buttons on the right from the 'search' field, the one you want is 'Select Aggregation Mode'. With it you can choose how to group and present the headers. -
