installed kde4.2 now black screen only no gui anymore at all

Hi all.
i used to have kubuntu 7.10 later i upgrated to the next and since the release of 8.10 i upgraded with kubuntu 8.10 on the same laptop.

yesterday i installed the kde 4.2 on my kde 4.1 kubuntu
adding the proper repository in sources.list and followed the instuctions
in kubuntu.org
but as soun as i rebooted my kdm shows up as normally but
when i logged in the screen turned into black and i could only
log in into tty (no gui)

I tried to start and stop kdm , i tried kdm failsafe and also tried startx
but nothing i get nothing instead of a black screen... >
and it is so annoying > after that fancy experience of the plasmas and kde 4 stuff..

So does anybody have any solution or suggestion ?
How to get back to stable kde 4.1 or how to make kde 4.2 work
as it should ?

Please provide me some feedback
I tried to find information in #kubuntu irc iside this forum and around the web
but i wasn' t lucky to find a solution

I want to avoid reinstalling kubuntu all because of this.

also i would really like to know how
to connect to my wireless router from konsole without the
gui .
Is there any standard place in the filesystem where
the wireless networks information are stored so i can be able to
use the information from command line to connect to the wireless?
Because my kde 4 desktop gui is not working and i have no access to
the fancy liitle plasma applet for wireless to conect to my wireless

for KDE 4.2, since I installed it last night and still fight with it...
Well, have you tried the recovery mode to fix system file or something?
This works on my laptop, it installed MySQL then (used 3 hours for downloading ...)

This sounds like a video card issue.

Could you post your video card specs?

Also just to be on the safe side you can do this:
boot with the intrepid live cd and find tis hidden fille in /home: .kde (note the dot before kde!!!)
rename this to .kdeOld and reboot.

Note that hidden files can be viewed in dolphin by activating view->view hidden files.

I tried the recovery mode but nothing
dbkg suggested to to type: apt-get -f install
but i can't connect to internet....

since i can connect to my wifi from command line i cannot
actually use the apt-get anymore because there is nothing on the drive left
to go back to kde 4.1 from the buggy 4.2...

I tried to connect to the router with a wire

but the i couldn't ...
i thought it would have been easy

i typed :
 ifconfig eth0

but even if it was displaying "RUNNING"
i could not connect nowhere on the net
Does anybody knows why?
i suspect that i might need to use the dhclient command
somehow but i have no idea and i am so angry i can't get it work >
but in windows i did with one click..
I am so angry my linux is not working out of the box like i used to.
Typically my linux machines work out of the box.. but sometimes like this time.... i get nothing
running as it should....

I need a way to connect to my wifi from command line :(

I tried iwlist scan

i saw the correct my essid and all other info
BUT i don't now what command shall i give to connect to the wi-fi and how can i pass it in the
passphrase i usually do from the gui.

My video graphics driver specs as of lspci are:

VGA Compatible controller: Intel corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943.940GML express intergrated
Graphics Controller (rev 03)

It used to work out of the box

Finally i typed apt-get remove kde-core and now i have no kde at all
So I really really need to know how to connect to the wireless from the command line
in order to update my system with the apt-get mechanism..

Sorry to see what happened to your install, I must have been lucky...

But at least you still have the command line

Although I would strongly suggest to get a wired connection working (eth0) you might want to try these tips:

I don't know if you have a protected mode like WEP or WPA in use on your wifi but I would suggest to use an unprotected mode until you have these issues solved.

Hi!

i also had black screen issue, then i apt-get autoremove useless packages (kdeartwork) and than i install kdeartwork again and now it works.

hope it will work 4 u also.

Finally Everything is ok now

i made a mistake while trying to connect to the router .
I used the STP port instead of the standard ethernet port
so that's why i wasn't able to connect to my LAN ...

I installed kde4 again and this time i got only some errors about some missing configuration files.
It just "needed" a new install
I installed also Gnome only to be sure that if i have any crash again with the KDE4.2 i will
be able to use some gui untill i find a solution.

Also I found out that a cool way to connect to a protected wireless (wpa2)
is to use the wpa_supplicant program
I test it (after closing the network manager ) and it worked ,
Finally I am able to connect to the internet from the command line
