How do I get rid of the bad KDE and go back to the good one?

I have been using a Mac for the last year or so and just put Kubuntu 8.10 on this new computer. I was shocked to find it so ugly and unusable. I put Kubuntu on a friends computer last summer and it was great.

I think the main problem is KDE. How do I put the good one on it and get this one off? I have been a long time Linux user and I was lost and started swearing at the computer. Come on guys, this desktop is crap.

Before you procede, verify which version of KDE you are running. Open any application - Konqueror - and click on Help > About KDE

If it is showing KDE 4.1.x then you really want to upgrade KDE to 4.2.00 which is leaps and bounds better.

if you want to use kde 3.5 (as when you installed on my friends machine last summer) you should not install 8.10 but use 8.04 instead. Don't install 8.10 and try to install kde3.5 w/ it, because thats just asking for a bad time .....

I'm having many difficulties after upgrading to 4.2 as well. I don't have the menubar (with the min/max quit buttons) on any programs. I did as suggested and turned off all the plasmoids I had running on 4.1, and I can't get a lot of them back. Programs don't show up on the bottom (what's that called, it's not the system tray?), and most other plasmoids just show up as a big red X. It so unusable I'm having to use gnome now. I'm guessing I'm going to have to do a clean install at this point. If I download the latest intrepid, will it have kde 4.2? Is there another option?

Install Kubuntu 8.04 and you get all you want.

Try this - fixed it for me and I had the exact same problem:
            sudo apt-get install --reinstall kde-window-manager

Try out the new Debian 5. They don't have the need for the very last crap version like Kubuntu. It comes with KDE 3.5.10 - expect it rock stable.
