    Problems installing KDE 4.2 [Solved]

I'm using Kubuntu version 8.10 and I've been trying to upgrade to KDE 4.2. I've made several attempts all unsuccessful. I've tried following the instructions on the Kubuntu site but I must not be reading between the lines or something. For example:

I do not know how to uninstall plasmoids. What are the packages used?

When installing I get the following error in apt:

    Commit failed.
To continue, hit ok and we will try to recover. If you close the application now, we will not do anything and you may try to resolve the problem manually.
(If you suspect this is a bug in Adept, please also provide the following exception description in the report).

    The error was:
    APT Error. Context:
    Running dpkg,
    [ /usr/bin/dpkg, --status-fd, 3, --unpack, /var/cache/apt/archives/strigi-daemon_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/strigi-client_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libstrigihtmlgui0_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libstreamanalyzer0_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libstreams0_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libstrigiqtdbusclient0_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libsearchclient0_0.6.3-1ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs5-data_40x0.000000236df98p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid1~ppa1_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs5_40x0.000000236df98p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdebase-runtime_40x0.000000236df98p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa3_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4_40x0.000000236df98p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa3_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdebase-runtime-data-common_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa3_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdebase-runtime-data_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa3_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libkdecorations4_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa7_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libkwineffects1_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa7_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kde-window-manager_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa7_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/ksysguard_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa7_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libboost-program-options1.34.1_1.34.1-11ubuntu1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libakonadiprivate1_1.1.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libical0_0.43-2ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdepimlibs-data_40x0.0000002359c08p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid~ppa4_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdepimlibs5_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid~ppa4_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/phonon_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdebase-workspace-bin_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa7_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libkonq5-templates_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa2_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libkonq5_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa2_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdebase-plasma_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa2_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kate_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa3_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/plasmoid-quickaccess_0.7.1-0ubuntu6~intrepid1~ppa1_amd64.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/kdeplasma-addons_40x0.0000002306838p-10224.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa2_amd64.deb ],

After logging off and trying to log back on it just goes back to the log in screen.

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Problems installing KDE 4.2

    UPDATE:

I reinstalled Kubuntu, again, and this time tried doing the update completely from the command line. Now I am able to log in, but I cannot type at all, and there is no title bar at the top of windows (to close, minimize, maximize, etc).

    Thanks in advance!

      Re: Problems installing KDE 4.2

      Hi,

I had similar problems but didn't have to re-load Kubuntu thankfully.

As far as I could work out the 'plasmoids' are the widgets! Just remove them if you've added any since re-installing the OS. have a look at this too (top few lines) it might help.

PS I use Synaptic for package management - it always seems to chuck up fewer problems.

Re: Problems installing KDE 4.2 [Solved]

I found the solution. My previous searches had turned up nothing, but I found what I needed on another thread. For some reason kde window manager was not installed.

        http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3101481

        I used the following commands:

        sudo apt-get clean

        sudo apt-get purge kde-window-manager

        sudo apt-get install kdebase-workplace

Thanks for the help and additional ideas!

No problem and glad it's sorted.

I've picked up a couple of useful items too to add to my file.

            This happened to me.

I chose recovery mode in the GRUB boot menu.

Then I chose the DPKG option in the next menu.

Then I said Y to everything it asked me.

When it was done I rebooted and everything was fine and I had KDE 4.2!
