Nvidia installation question..

I was trying to follow the info in this link http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...86621#msg86621

However, when I do the Ctrl-Alt-F1it goes to a command prompt. My question is, what is CLI? I type cli at the prompt then it asks for a password but my password doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

CLI means Command Line. It isn't a command; it refers to the console "command line prompt."

So I don't actually log in to CLI I just start to enter the commands.

I just tried this and it's asking me to login. Login to what? I just don't seem to be getting this.

All the commands in Dibl's HOWTO are run "as root." That's what sudo does. When you type in the command you are prompted for your password. Assuming you are the one who installed Kubuntu on the PC, it is the password you use when you login. The person who installs Kubuntu (or any *buntu) is part of the Administrator group, and when required, you are able to gain super-user powers.

It says ed-laptop login. I put the command there with the sudo and it asked for my password so I put it in and it says incorrect login. I am the one who installed this. My password works for everything else like Adept and synaptic so I suppose that's the one to use here. My login is ed but that doesn't work either. I must be doing something wrong.

My bad! Sorry.

When you press Ctrl+Alt+F1 it takes you to a TTY session, and yes, you have to login. First, type in your user name and press enter. Then you will be prompted for your password. Type that in and press enter. Then you can follow Dibl's instructions.

Ok guys. I get as far as the copy the nvidia installer to current directory. I do sudo cp /home/ed/nvidia-linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run and press enter. I get this error CP: missing destination file operand after '/home/ed/nvidia-linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run'

I tried it without the /ed/ but got the same error. I am in the tmp/nv folder that was created while doing this.

The cp syntax is:

cp somefile destination/somefile

So, if you are in the /tmp/nv directory, the command, based on what you have posted, would be:

sudo cp nvidia-linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run /home/ed/nvidia-linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run

Nvidia has made new Beta (aka "pre-release") driver, 180.27 available. I installed it last night (same process as on the link) and it is working great on my Kubuntu 8.10/KDE 4.2 system. Here's where you can get the Beta driver:
